Basement with standing water around stored boxes after a backup. Sewage cleanup and sewage backup cleanup Philadelphia PA

A sewage backup is not a job for a mop and a bucket. Sewage is Category 3 water, the industry term for grossly contaminated water, and anything porous it soaks into, like carpet, pad and the lower part of the drywall, comes out and gets disposed of rather than dried and kept.

We handle sewage cleanup across Philadelphia, Delaware County, Montgomery County, Bucks County, Chester County, South Jersey, and Northern Delaware. Most sewage backups come up through a basement floor drain or a toilet, and the call usually starts the same way: the drain started gurgling, then water came up, and it smells like exactly what it is.

The work runs in a set order. Contain the area so the sewage does not get tracked through the rest of the house. Extract the sewage and the water with it. Remove the contaminated materials that cannot be cleaned. Clean and disinfect what stays with EPA-registered disinfectants, deodorize, and dispose of the waste properly. Then dry the structure with moisture readings to confirm it, and repair it. Our crews work in protective gear the whole way through, and our IICRC Certified #70009595 technicians document each step for your insurance claim.

Straight Answer

Who to Call for a Sewage Backup

Usually two calls. A plumber or drain company clears the blocked line so the backup stops. We clean up the house: we contain the area, remove the sewage and what it soaked, disinfect, dry and repair.

What we do not do is clear the line. We are not a sewer cleaning company. If the main line is blocked by roots or has collapsed, a plumber or drain company makes that repair. We work alongside them on most sewage backup jobs and coordinate the order so the line is clear before we finish drying.

The reason that order matters: clearing the line stops new sewage coming in, but it does nothing about what already soaked into the drywall, the carpet, and the bottom of the walls. That cleanup is a separate job from the plumbing, and it is the one most people do not know to call about. If you are not sure who you need first, call (215) 240-2281 and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you.

What It Costs

What Drives the Cost of Sewage Cleanup

There is no flat rate for sewage cleanup, and anyone quoting one over the phone is guessing. A floor drain that pushed sewage onto a bare concrete floor and a backup that soaked a finished basement are not the same job.

What actually moves the number: how much floor area the sewage reached, whether the space is finished with carpet, drywall, and baseboards, how high the sewage wicked up the walls, how long it sat before anyone caught it, how many days of drying the readings call for, and how much has to be rebuilt afterward.

We do a free on-site inspection and give you an itemized estimate before any work starts. If it is going through insurance, we bill your carrier directly.

What We Handle

What Causes a Sewage Backup

Main Sewer Line Backup

Tree roots, grease, wipes, or an old clay or cast iron line that has cracked or sagged can block the main line out to the street. When it blocks, everything the house drains has nowhere to go, and it comes back up at the lowest opening, which is usually the basement.

Floor Drain Backup

The basement floor drain is tied into the same line. When the line downstream is blocked or overloaded, sewage pushes up through the drain and spreads across the floor. This is the most common sewage backup in basement calls we get.

Toilet Overflow With Sewage

A toilet that keeps overflowing, or one that bubbles when another fixture drains, is often a sign of a blocked line rather than a clogged toilet. Overflow with waste in it is sewage, and it runs under the toilet, into the subfloor, and often through to the ceiling below.

Storm Surge Into the Sewer Line

Heavy rain overloads older combined and municipal sewer systems, and the pressure pushes sewage back up through the lowest drains in the house. These come in waves with the storm, which is why a backup can stop and start again the same night.

Why Professional Matters

Don't Risk DIY Restoration

The instinct with a sewer backup is to shop vac it, pour bleach on the floor, and run a fan. The problem is that the sewage does not stay on the floor. It wicks up into drywall, soaks carpet pad and the bottom plate of the walls, and gets into the gaps between the slab and the framing. Bleach on the surface does not reach any of that, and drying a material that should have been removed just leaves the contamination in place behind a dry face. Our crews work in protective gear, contain the area so it is not tracked through the house, remove the porous materials the sewage reached, disinfect with EPA-registered disinfectants, and only start drying once the contaminated material is out. We measure the moisture before and after and give you that in writing, which matters if this is going through an insurance claim.

Step By Step

What Happens When We Arrive

1

Make the Area Safe & Contain It

We check for electrical hazards in the wet area first, then contain the affected space so the sewage is not carried through the rest of the house on shoes, equipment, or air movement.

2

Remove the Sewage

Our crews work in protective gear and extract the sewage and the water with it. The waste is disposed of properly, not rinsed down another drain in the house.

3

Map How Far It Reached

Sewage wicks up drywall and runs under flooring and baseboards. We map how far it reached with moisture meters, which decides how high the drywall gets cut and how much flooring comes out.

4

Remove Contaminated Materials

Carpet, pad, the lower part of the drywall, insulation, and other porous materials the sewage soaked are removed and disposed of rather than dried and kept. We cut to clean lines so the rebuild is a straight repair.

5

Clean, Disinfect & Dry

Hard surfaces like concrete, tile, and framing are cleaned and treated with EPA-registered disinfectants, then deodorized. Air movers and commercial dehumidifiers dry the structure, and we take readings until it hits target moisture levels.

6

Repair the Space

Drywall, flooring, baseboards, and paint. We put the basement or room back the way it was and handle the whole rebuild rather than handing you off.

Do Not Wait

When a Sewage Backup Is an Emergency

Any sewage inside the house is worth a call the same day. These three mean call now.

It is still coming up. If sewage is still rising through a floor drain or toilet, stop running water, flushing toilets, and running the washer or dishwasher anywhere in the house. Everything you drain goes to the same blocked line.

It is spreading into finished space. Sewage on bare concrete is a cleanup. Sewage soaking into carpet, under drywall, and into a finished basement grows the job every hour it sits.

There is electrical or a furnace in the wet area. Do not walk into standing water near outlets, a panel, a furnace, or a water heater. If you can safely shut power to that area at the panel, do it. If you cannot, stay out and call us.

Any of the three, call (215) 240-2281. We answer 24 hours a day.

Insurance Coverage for Sewage Cleanup

Sewer backup coverage is often a separate part of a homeowner's policy, sometimes called a sewer or water backup endorsement, and some policies leave it out unless it was added. It is worth checking yours before you assume either way. We do not make the coverage decision, but we do document the loss the way an adjuster needs it from the first visit: photographs, moisture readings, a written scope, and daily drying logs. We work with most major insurance carriers and bill them directly in most cases, so you are not paying out of pocket and waiting to be reimbursed.

We do not recommend it. Raw sewage carries bacteria. Keep people and pets out of the area, stop running water and flushing toilets, and leave the cleanup to a crew that works in protective gear. A mop and bleach move the problem around; they do not remove what soaked into the drywall and flooring.
